Wolfgang Palm , the publisher behind many iOS app (MiniMapper ,WaveMapper ,PPG FREE), brings WaveMapper with a number of new features along with the usual bug fixes. WaveMapper app has been update to version 1.0.0 with several major changes and improvements. App release that improves performance, provides several new options.
PPG WaveMapper is the second next-generation iOS based synth from Wolfgang Palm, who in 2012 released the PPG WaveGenerator to critical acclaim from both press and public.
In final development the PPG WaveMapper offers iPad users a second synthesiser to compliment the already loved PPG WaveGenerator from Wolfgang Palm. PPG WaveMapper allows the user the opportunity to create limitless sounds from this unique and powerful new technology.

PPG WaveMapper features the Sound Map, which maps the various sounds in a way to easily access and experiment with them, more importantly the PPG WaveMapper features a new synthesis system which maps the waveforms of a sound into a new kind of wavetable which preserves the sound characteristics better than classic Wavetable synthesis and at the same time allows for the manipulations which make WT synthesis so unique.
The Mapping window is the visualisation of a pool of programs on which “modules” float. Those modules represent certain parameters of the synthesiser engine and each module can be placed on one of 32 programs. The moment an item is placed on map then the parameters of that module will take on the settings of those parameters in the underlying program on the Mapping window.
People who do not posses synth-programming skills can use this mapping technology as a starting point to create complex sounds. For example a user can drag a string sound source onto a drum envelope, or a guitar sound onto a string envelope – the concept is simple, yet incredibly powerful.
Power users can delve deep into the back end of any sound using a full set of professional features;
▪New Sound map concept – create new sounds playful and experimental
▪3 types of synthesis – the optimal type for kind of each sounds
▪Classic wavetables – for the typical PPG sounds
▪Time compressed samples – more authentic sounds, allowing analysis of user samples
▪Pure samples – classic sample playback Analyzer – convert your own samples into the new format or into wavetables
▪3 oscillators capable for totally independent sound sources
▪90 sound resources – a huge sound palette, from real instruments to abstract wavetables
▪4 parameter editor pages – comfortable and detailed access to all the parameters
▪3 Noise generators, for audio and modulations
▪Classic 24 dB Lowpass Filter, combined with an overdrive simulation.
▪Dual amplifier, for versatile control of 2 audio signals as well as panning.
▪13 Envelopes, for independent control of pitch, waveform, filter and noise
▪gain and panning
▪4 LFOs – with 5 waveforms
▪Schematic touch keyboard – Build your own keyboard, with the keys you prefer for your music.
▪Powerful sound browser – sorting by category, bank management
▪Virtual and Hard-MIDI in/out – sending/receiving keys and controllers.
▪10 min audio recording and Audio copy.

This synth breaks two timehonored rules of my synth experience 1 Instead of the included presets representing pretty much every sound the synth is able to make these presets although very good dont even scratch the surface of every sonic possibility in Wavemapper 2 It is usually easier to make bad sounding patches than it is to make great sounding patches Wavemapper turns this upside down creating a great sounding patch is more likely than an awful one Breaking THE Rules
This is a masterpiece of an app Its sound is rich and complex I put it on par with my other favorite apps Animoog and AlchemyI am glad to see that PolyPresure is recognized and sent I hope to see more soft synths and midi sequencers support it in the future There are a couple of inexpensive polypressure keyboards CMI XKey and KMI QuNexus coming out on the market soon and should work very well with synths that support polypressureI believe my money was well spent Very Nice
I have just about every synth app This one blows them all away I mean the feature set is ridiculous but OTOH if you just want to play with presets or dont know anything about synthesis its still the greatest It sounds PHENOMENAL With headphones or speakers plugged in it is astonishing It is also hands down the greatest value of the iOS synths too Some features worth mentioning even though you may have read about them in the descriptionYou can load your own samples and use them as waveformsBuilt in recorder Most synths dont have this or charge extra This is doubly important because you can record yourself playing a patch and then USE THAT RECORDING AS A ROOT A root program is a source in ppg parlance like sawtooth triangle square noise etc Comprehensive midi implementation The best I have used Provides for midi in AND out Most others dont or charge extra Very useful arpeggiator which is more like a sequencer really Envelopes up tha wazoo Much like crystal in this respect Ring modulation very nice filter multiple noise sources with different color distortion or drive Echo and Delay Really really well done and not cheesy or gimmicky like some others These are the worth running other synths through Very nice way of organizingbrowsing presets Visual and deep COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATED HELP SYSTEM not web based so you can use it offline Best keyboard implementation Animoog is prettier but wavemapper is better and offers more control Zero knobs Why would you put knobs on a touchscreen synth Much more useful sliders with gross and fine control I could go on Watching Wolfgangs intro videos pushed me over the edge to purchase an ipad and I can say this app delivered The only criticism I have is the way the modulation routing and envelopes are all on different tabs I think Id prefer an NI absynth type organization where you have one page for all the different envelopes A separate tab for a modulation matrix would also be a bit more intuitive You need this Best iOS synth First true 21st century synth
Wolfgang Palm invented wave table synthesis and hes still making waves today with his second iOS synth WaveGenerator was closer to a port of his prior concepts but WaveMapper really takes advantage of the iPads touch interface to provide an awesome experience Drag around icons representing the 3 oscillators filter amp noise and each takes on the character of the sound source its covering string instruments voices traditional synt oscillators Great thing about this app is that for someone experienced wave table or subtractive synthesis it provides a ton of depth but its simultaneously a great instrument for my kids who are just learning the fun of sound design Genius
Absolutely fascinating to play with May well forget what my plan was when I started its so involving Fascinating
This is unbelievably awesome It will take some time to unravel the mysteries of this synth and I wouldnt have it any other way Amazing
Wavemapper is the best sounding most efficient most inspiring synth created to date for the IPad Something tells me that we are going to hear patches from this synth on a lot of recordings for years to come Every moment with this app is a surprising transcendental mediation in sound synthesis Hands down the best
Just when I started thinking there couldnt possibly think there couldnt be another synth out to get on iOS along comes this one I have been looking it over for the past month or so and finally bought it and in the past always bought high rated synths and also have Wavegenerator So I was pretty sure this one would be great other than its high reviews but I am glad I got it It seems like it will bring very great sounds to mine Loving it I frisking love this synth
If you are familiar with PPG synthesizers Waldorf Synthesizers then you already know who Wolfgang Palm is what wave synthesis is capable of doing This product is brilliant It is very Intuitive a pleasure to work with The method of interaction is stimulating even for an old veteran synthesist like me I have every intention of using it in my studiothis is a must buy for musical explores Genius Ipad Application
While far too many synthesizer designers wallow in past glories and comfortably familiar designs Wolfgang Palm continues to look to the future with new ideas approaches and sounds Yes WaveMapper has a famous pedigree and like PPGs previous iOS instrument WaveGenerator it bears some sonic resemblence to PPGs groundbreaking Wave table synthesizers of the 1980s However those instruments were as unusual in their day as WaveMapper is today and for many of the same reasons not least being because they break with the common trend toward analogue subtractive synthesis with its handful of simple waveformsIn much the same way so too did Palms Plex which as my old friend xbruce has noted in his review also informs the design of this new and exciting instrument Plex was largely and unfairly ignored upon release perhaps because it was ahead of its time arriving in an industry clamoring for the Holy Grail of analogue emulationThankfully todays electronic musicians are interested in new sounds as well as old and WaveMapper can provide exactly that and with little effort or knowledge required of the user That isnt to say that the instrument isnt capable of deep programmability it is Yet even the greenest of neophytes can drag icons around the Mapping screen and achieve interesting results And while its true that WaveMapper employes many standard subtractive functions like a resonant filter its oscillators are rooted firmly in the digital realm drawing upon an entirely new method of creating and manipulating wavetables Better still you can bring your own samples in and subject them to WaveMappers many wondersAll of the usual parameters youd expect are here too ring modulation LFOs and a whopping thirteen envelope generators plus delay effects and a nifty arpeggiator and MIDI IO too Audiobus is supported as is a full ten minutes of recording time and AudioCopy so youll be able to move your work around your iPads other appsWolfgang Palm may not be as well known as Moog or Buchla but he deserves to be held in equal regard His PPG Waves were astonishing instruments and are beloved by many even today They defined the modern era of sound synthesis even if many people never knew it wavetable synthesis is everywhere though often in a diluted form When it remains true to Palms original intent it can be very powerful indeed think Microwave Blofeld even Access Virus if you must but when it is taken even further as it has been in WaveMapper it can produce breathtaking resultsI for one am thrilled to see Mr Palm back in the game and supporting this relatively new platform Hundreds of synths have passed through my hands but few have continued to inspire me like my Wave 22Waveterm combo Doubtlessly WaveMapper will become equally indispensible Its almost ridiculous that you can get this much sonic power for twenty bucks Assuming theres any sense left in the world WaveMapper might just represent the sound of the future A Modern Masterpiece
The title says it allI know it will be fixed though Everything but copypaste and audiobus
I am using WaveMapper to create soundworlds which it is really incredible at doing These soundworlds are infinitely and deeply noisy though You wouldnt think that WaveMapper would be good for this end of things but it truly is I am continually amazed at what it will allow me to do I never feel limited Only excited Youll see what I mean Deep useful invaluable
So easy to use sounds great Unusual sounds are easy to make drag n drop inferface is great Lots of fun but this is not a toy Fully capable of sounds that will sit nice in a mix Great Sound No Effort
Top notch synth app Believe it 5 star
Wolfgang is one of us Not just a musician but a magician An Incredible must have right now synth Dont be the one to miss out on this diamond in a sea of sand Its ability to constantly amaze is truly something else Christo Beyond cool
This is a legendary instrument so many possiblities this is my top rated ios synth Every ios production seems to include wavemapper or wavwgenerator in some form I use it on drum sounds pads leads keys atmospherics raw feedback sounds so useful Keep up the great work Masterpiece Synth
Thats about all I have to say at the moment OMG OMG
This would be the synthesizer of my dreams if only I could figure out how to use it The functionality is amazing but the UI is very poorly designed and the user manual doesnt help For example I created a new voice by editing one of the factory presets extensively but when I tried to save it as a new voice the app told me that the bank was full and I had to create a new bank The UI doesnt explain the mental model of the bank manager and the manual only documents the options After wrestling with it for hours I still have no idea how to manage banks and store custom voices Also theres no feedback when changing keyboard octaves or selecting between keyboard edit and play mode If the developers had only used a good UI designer or done some usability testing this would be the best sound design and synthesizer app in the store Amazingly frustrating
It is so cool that one of the great innovators of synthesizers is still at it This is a brilliant and well though out synthesizer that brings a new approach to creating unique new sounds It is easy and fun or mind boggling fun You choose how deep you want to get with this thingMuch thanks mr Palm Innovation
And happy I did the sounds are beefy I am not acquainted with the schematics of it quite yet but I am inspired by the ease at which new sounds can be generated I cant wait to plug the iPad in my iodock and route this apps outs through my Event 2020ps Totally Stoked indeed Thanks again Mr Palm Got it without hesitation
This is the end all Been using it a few days and each use my preset list grows with new and useful sounds It is so easy to become a sound designer and lots of fun too Ez 5 stars plus If you like the entire spectrum of synth sounds and effects this is a must havefits in any musical environment Thanks Wow
Why there arent more reviews for this amazingsounding creation from the legendary Wolfgang Palm is beyond me Get it get into it dont be lazy and it will reward you in immeasurable ways Sounds like nothing else but the PPG DNA is there for sure Genius
Part of me wants to hide how cool this is so everyone wont use this Ive only spent 5 hours with this and my mind is blown Seriously Im going Pro today My own samples with this engine and interface I cant wait HorribleNOT
I dont understand why the dev limited every presets bank in 100 presets There is no reason to do that With random button it is very easy to produce lots of presets I always start with an existing preset and tap random until something interesting comes up Very soon a bank could be full and I have to built a new one and copy some presets into the new bank as starters Since Wavemapper only allows to copy one preset one time so if I want to copy 50presets into the new bank I have to copy 50 times and delete 50 times It is really ridiculousWhat could happen if a bank allows 500 presets I dont think there is any technical difficulty Worst presets management
Another winning idea from the mind of Wolfgang PalmAbout a decade ago Steinberg put out a synthesizer designed by Palm called PLEX Which featured icons of waveforms or at least small wavelets that you placed over conceptual ideas This way you were able to use the beginning middle and ending parts of a waveform within the sound of an instrument Now with wave mapper you are able to extend the idea to many parts of the sound in this case things such as tanning volume LFO and a large host of other synthesis techniques and sounds versus wavelets such as used in PLEX Another substantial difference is that instead of having these precast to three sample phases you are able to work with so much more not only of the wavelets but the aforementioned complex mappings of what makes a synthesis structureThey arent kidding when they mentioned that you need no prior symphysis programming experience but your inner geek will be delighted if you are a true synthesist It helps to understand what the wavelets sound like Prior to trying and readily understanding what you are doing in a patch The good news is you are able to easily listen to what they sound like individually in WaveMappers Root Instrument Mapper which is essentially a part of the app that allows you to edit existing or your own what Ive been calling wavelets which are added to an attractive grid and populated with squares called Synthetic Program which define the essence of how the program worksThink of it like this The instrument mapper contains the actual wavelengths and are placed upon the synthetic program which describe what the synth does In this way you are able to use many small parts of a waveform and populate that waveform all over a place which describes what to do at a specific time and space It sounds so much harder than it actually is the best way to get your feet wealth is to simply play with the little icons that represent wavelets as I call them and the little board that contains their descriptorsWhat you get are fantastic moving sounds that can go anywhere from pads and fx to beefy basses and emblematic leads I especially like WaveMaker because It allows you to sound like you meaning if you have your own kind of sound you will have no problem being able to replicate it or go far beyond it This is the type of idea within the synthesis community that programmers will love because it enables them to be able to express themselves just the way that analog synths used to back in the 60s and early 70sBut really its more Its in the digital domain and for some that must seem like a terrible thing but it isnt The sounds themselves are very warm when meant to be or as cold as you want them to be Thats the choice that you get and thats why WaveMaker isnt just excellent but transcends the boundaries of talentinconcept and raises it to brilliance Im not one for hyperbole but with WaveMakers approach to synthesis it inspires me It gets me thinking about how sound works how to reach boundaries and how to surpass them One of my professors once said regarding traditional methods of orchestration that some composers thought in terms of tonality for discussions sake lets say that means timbre whilst others thought in form again for this discussion sake lets say that would be someone like Bach and his impeccable precision in construction of music form Get even more composers such as Mahler or more contemporary artists such as Barber had a wonderful capability defining momentous segments in already masterfully written music that added gesture or in this discussions cases we might equate gesture to a synthesizersynthesists ability to create a sound and or way of playing or even producing moments in time that quite literally take the flow of a song and create that indescribable feel but not in the sense of a persons emotions but rather an intangible something not easily described sensation something like the hook in a commercial song yet far more subtle Or to borrow from a US Supreme Court Justice asked how to define the what pornography was to which he replied I know it when I see it to which I paraphrase I dont hear the difference in WaveMaker and other synths until I cant identify a sound and then think oh it might be WaveMaker And not many synths chose that road to travel because it is harder to create something that can do what most synths do and go beyond that by making simple and obvious choices to create musical sounds yet heardAnd that brings us back to WaveMaker The digital synthesizer that sounds like all synthesizers whenever you want them to be The flavor you have never tasted yet seems instantly familiar So much of this synthesizer seems to have the character of oxymoron yet is direct as a straight lineif you want it to be Why does WaveMaker appear to be an oxymoron To use another nonmusical reference while describing WaveMakers character Using putty to sculpt organic sound It sounds like it would be unintuitive to work with yet the interface is clean and simple to operate In print it might sound very complex to use but in reality workflow is quite simple yet unique visually as it is aurallyThe price is not inexpensive but it is definitely worth its cost Stunning concept stunning execution
I bought the same developers first app WaveGenerator WG right away I was impressed by the flexibility but disappointed by the actual sound compared with some of the subtractive synths in the app store eg Sunrizer Animoog Magellan WG seemed harsh and artificial WaveMapper WM is a very different experience it can sound chemically but it can sound organic too I dont know how to account for the difference since some of my favorite WM patches use WG wavetables and the new app can import all of the first apps sounds I havent given up on WG but to my ear WM is more immediately musical If you are choosing between the two apps try WaveMapper first If you like that WaveGenerator is a logical progression More immediately musical than WaveGenerator
I honestly must say this is by far so much easier to handle quickly get the sound you want hats off This is a top notch synth with a very big high quality sound hats off ThanksJust Thanks
